El término comenzó a ser utilizado en 1955 por los propios anti-peronistas para llamarse a sí mismos en sentido apreciativo. Posteriormente, el término también ha sido utilizado por peronistas y no peronistas, a menudo con significados despectivos.
La expresión se extendió por toda América Latina como sinónimo de “reaccionario de derecha”, “militarista”, “golpista” o “anticomunista”.
Según Fidel Castro en un discurso en 1963, existen también “gorilas” vestidos como civiles.
Un estudio publicado en marzo de 2018 por Bertelsmann Stiftung se llegó a la conclusión de que mil millones de personas más viven bajo dictadura ahora con relación a hace 15 años.
